Name/Title

Tile: Quilts; Chickens T-15, Brown

Description

A two-color silkscreen underglaze print on a white tile blank depicting a rooster, a hen, a branch with teardrop shaped leaves, and a star of David. It was produced in two colorways, brown and blue. A blue example has not been documented. This example never had cork feet or the Country Print Tiles label hanger installed on the back. Purchased from the family of a former Country Prints employee, it is likely a factory “second” due to the horizontal discoloration of the underglaze at the rooster’s feet. This tile appears in the c.1956 brochure “Country Prints Tiles designed by Robert Darr Wert”; see images. This tile design is one of twelve panels found on a c.1953 Country Prints towel/wallhanging titled Quilts 203 (see below), which is a graphic reinterpretation of a Pennsylvania “Dutch” appliqué quilt.
