A placemat set with two five-color silkscreen print designs on off-white linen depicting items found in a well equipped early American kitchen.
Placemat: The composition is flanked by brown brick chimney columns connected by a wooden beam. From the beam hang cooking tools, herbs, a ham and a garlic braid. A chair, bench, butter churn, cast iron pot and glass demijohns populate the lower section.
Napkin: the print is relegated to the right margin of the fabric and includes a copper ladle, pan and baking peel hanging from an overhead beam, with a butter churn and demijohn on the floor below.
This placemat set is described with two linen choices on the 1958 Country Prints price list, “122 Country Kitchen — Early Reds, Blue, maple and Blk on either white or tan.”
It is listed in the January 1960 Country Prints price list in two colorways (red or brown). It appears in the brochures “Mat Sets by Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints”, c.1960 (with fringed edges), and “Country Prints by Robert Darr Wert and Neighbors”, c.1963 (with serged and bound edges); see brochure images below.
