Print: Country Life 1012-2Description
A five-color silkscreen print off-white linen depicting a Pennsylvania “Dutch” farmer and wife in eighteenth century dress standing amongst tools of everyday work on a farm. A red rooster stands atop a red heart, within which begins a joyous quote from “As You Like It” by William Shakespeare, “And this our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees - books in running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in every thing.”
Wert explored this quote at least twice in print. Based on the signature, drawing style and frame, this is the later of the two versions; see images.
This print appears in the c.1955 brochure “Country Prints in Frames”, and in a c.1955 price list paired with Miller 1012-4, with the notation “Revised”.Made/Created
