Description

An apron made of natural linen with a four-color silkscreen print depicting herbs, kitchen tools and gardening tools. At left, an herb plant grows from a wooden bucket on a wheelbarrow. The branches of the plant form the borders around a patch pocket. On the pocket is an image and text for the herb rosemary. Inside the pocket is a depiction of a tabbed index card with a description of basil. To the right and left of the wheelbarrow are gardening tools. At right, an herb plant grows from a footed cast iron skillet. The branches of the plant form a border around depictions of tabbed index cards with descriptions of chives, dill and marjoram. To the right and left of the skillet are kitchen tools, including a pepper grinder and an oil & vinegar bottle. A newly introduced matching potholder was produced. A matching towel/wallhanging, and tile were also produced. These items were available singly or in matched gift sets; see images. This is one of over sixty designs sold by Country Prints to Stevens Linen Associates of Dudley, Massachusetts, in January 1969. From that point onward, the designs were produced by Stevens with all reference to Robert Darr Wert and Country Prints removed. Many of these designs continued to be produced by Stevens throughout the 1970’s and some into the 1980’s. In a memo from Fritz Kaufhold (Country Prints’ business manager) to Bob MacKay (Stonelea Mills/Stevens Linen Associates) dated February 12, 1969, Fritz notes the aprons “U220-1 Herb Chart, 226-1 Good Morning, and U230-1 Happy Heart have been selling in about the same quantities, but all three [sell] twice as well as U211-1 Daily Bread red, 212-1 Daily Bread blue, and U216-1 Woodenware.”
