Description

A four-color silkscreen underglaze print on a white tile blank depicting a milk-maid standing near a farm building holding a milk pail and milking stool. A sheep stands by her side. Fruiting trees flank the farm building. This tile is one of a set of four, only three of which have been documented. This design was also available as a set of four framed prints, and a set of four unmounted Gift Greeting prints; see images.

Design, screen production, and mixing of colored underglazes performed at the Country Prints workshop, Gill, MA. Screen printing of underglaze colors, clear glaze, firing and finishing by Ceramo Studio, NYC. This example is printed on the thicker tile body used by Country Prints/Ceramo Studio prior to 1962. On tile back, to the left of the tile manufacturer’s name, Wheeling, is the number 56, which indicates the year the tile blank was made.
