Notecard, Christmas: Plowshares Christmas Greeting 929Description
A Country Prints sales sample retained as a print record.
A four-color silkscreen print on off-white linen glued within a dye cut Strathmore notecard in blue-gray. The print depicts an angel flying above a New England style farm on a winter’s night. The angel points upward toward the Christmas star with its left hand, and downward to the open barn doors with its right. Within the barn is a manger, with a halo hovering above and to the left. In the sky, the words “oh little Town” refer to the traditional Christmas carol, “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem”. The image removes the birth of Jesus from Bethlehem and places it in a traditional New England scene, making the Christmas story more relevant and familiar to a North American audience.
Signed AD or DA in the lower left corner (obscured by card frame), this composition is the work of an unidentified freelance artist working for Country Prints after Wert’s death in January 1966.
This Christmas Greeting is part of Country Prints’ Plowshares collection of mostly Christian based inspirational cards and wall hangings. It appears in the brochure “Country Prints by Robert Darr Wert and Neighbors”, c.1966; see images.Made/Created
