Placemat: Calico Patch 131, Red

Description

A Country Prints production sample retained as a print record. Placemat: a three-color silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting eight panels of loosely drawn plants and animals, most likely inspired by old block prints. Panels and figures are enhanced with Wert’s interpretation of calico print patterns. Napkin: a one-color silkscreen print of black oval dots on solid color linen. This set appears in the c.1955 brochure “Country Prints Mat Sets and Luncheon Squares by Robert Darr Wert”. A matching tile was also produced; see images. This set is described in a c.1955 Country Prints price list, “(New) Eagles, Tulips, Pineapples and Hearts in an allover pattern suggesting old block prints. Early Blue or Barn Red each with Mustard and Black accents — Napkin as in pattern above [black dots on solid color linen]. Apron to match #426 — Tile to match #22 [actually #26].” Note: matching apron is undocumented. Edges are straight stitched and fringed.
