Name/Title
Wallhanging, Plowshares: Plowshares U852Description
A Country Prints sales sample retained as a print record.
A Plowshares wallhanging with a three-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting two farmers using wrought iron tools for harvesting apples and plowing furrows. A bird rests upon a blacksmith’s anvil and hammer. Amongst these elements appears the Bible verse Isaiah 2-4. An apple tree, a trailing vine and wheat stalks act as border elements. This print has been documented printed in three colors and four colors.
This passage from Isaiah is the origin of the name of Wert’s Plowshares line of wallhangings, the majority of which are Christian in theme.
Launched in 1964 for the 1965 calendar year, Plowshares is Country Prints’ line of narrow wallhangings, typically 8” x 24”, the majority of which are Christian in theme. Each came with a hand printed envelope for mailing or gift giving. Many had a small paper calendar attached at the base.
The top edge is finished to accept a dowel for hanging. Remaining edges are serged and bound with an overlock stitch.Made/Created
