Name/Title

Placemat: Bottles 125, c.1954

Description

A placemat with a six-color silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting glass bottles displayed in wood cabinets on either side of the mat. The twenty-seven bottles illustrated are hand blown, mold blown, and painted/enameled. Across the top of the mat, the design is unified with a blue calico valance and trailing vines of ivy. The title “BOTTLES” appears at lower left. The three matching napkins have silkscreen printed color fields on white linen with a black print of antique bottles. Later versions are printed on dyed blue linen. This set is described in a c.1955 Country Prints price list, “A near document on hand-blown glass in correct colors. Solid color napkins to match in Early Red, Green or Blue — matching runner #218 — white.” Edges are straight-stitched and fringed.
