Name/Title

Textile Yardage: Wood Ware (TK)

Description

A four color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting early American woodenware goods in repeat. The print name, “Early American Wood Ware”, appears at the center of each repeat. The repeat is borrowed from an early 1950’s Country Prints framed print titled “Wood Ware”, but is reinterpreted without the original calico print border; see images for comparison. This example appears to be printed on fabric with red woven selvedges, or alternately may be serged in a red binding stitch. In the early 1950’s, newspaper and magazine stories about Country Prints stated they were about to begin producing fabric yardage for use in dressmaking and home decorating. This is likely an example of fabric produced for this purpose, and one of the only surviving samples. This example descended through the Wert family and is in the collection of Kathryn Zentner.
