Description

This is a Country Prints production sample retained as a print record. A placemat set with a four-color silkscreen printed placemat and two two-color silkscreen printed napkins, all on natural linen. The placemat depicts a farmer and wife in eighteenth century dress. The farmer carries a scythe. The wife churns butter while holding a basket. The border is a quote from Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Act 1, Scene 1: “and this our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in tress, books in the runner brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.” This example was exhibited at the 1952 show at the Worcester Art Museum, “Massachusetts Crafts of Today”, which ran from April 5-May 11, 1952. This placemat was given the temporary accession number 430-52 A-D, meaning this is accession number 430 of 1952 and was one of four items exhibited by Country Prints (A-D). This placemat set also appears in the c.1951 brochure, “Church Hill Barn Presents the Newest Country Prints.”
