Wallhanging, Plowshares: Christmas, Gloria 707Description
A Plowshares wallhanging with a four-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting a scene from the night of Jesus’ birth rendered in the manner of medieval art.
At top, the Christmas star appears above a hovering angel in red robes. The angel unfurls a banner reading “in excelsis deo” above a seated shepherd. Beyond, the shepherd’s flock grazes on a hillside topped with a tree.
This wallhanging appears in the brochures “Fall and Christmas, Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints”, 1964, and “Fall and Christmas 1965, Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints”; see images.
Plowshares is Country Prints’ line of narrow wallhangings, typically 8” x 24”, the majority of which are Christian in theme. Each came with a stick and string for hanging, and a hand printed gift mailer.
Top edge is hemmed to accept a dowel for hanging, remaining edges are serged and bound with an overlock stitch.Made/Created
