Gift Greeting: Poor Richard’s, A Harvest of Peace (TK)Description
A five-screen/six-color silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting a Pennsylvania “Dutch” farmer in eighteenth century dress during harvest season. The man stands holding a scythe. In front of him is a shock of wheat intermixed with tools: a hoe for planting the wheat, a peel and a fork for cooking, and a fiddle for enjoying the coming winter, well-fed from the harvest. Above the farmer are harvest tools, a flail and sickle, with a bundle of dried corn. Beyond is a saltbox farmhouse backed with fruiting apple trees. At the foot of the composition is a maxim from Poor Richard’s Almanac, “a harvest of peace is produced from a seed of contentment.” Wert revisited this maxim a number of times with differing compositions.
