Print, Christmas: 1947 Country Prints Christmas Greeting
Description
A six-color silkscreen print on off-white cotton crash depicting music and musical instruments, a bowl of fruit, and a candle stand holding three candles, all ringed with holly leaves and berries, fronted with a banner bearing the latin phrase “DONA NOBIS PACEM”, which translates to “GRANT US PEACE”. This is the first annual Christmas greeting produced by Country Prints.
A surviving preliminary pencil sketch on trace paper illustrates how the design was changed and refined prior to the final print.
Sara Leeper notes the threaded candle stand in the sketch and the finished print was actually designed and made in wood by Bob Wert, with ceramic bobeches at the base of each candle. The bobeches were also made by Bob.
