Name/Title

Towel, Wallhanging: Horse Sense U225 (earlier version without date)

Description

A two-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting horse related and other maxims from Poor Richard’s Almanac by Benjamin Franklin. The text-heavy composition is designed to resemble old newspaper advertising and advertising bills posted in public squares. The print contains ten maxims from Poor Richard’s Almanac, with images to reinforce the sayings. Imagery is drawn to look like antique advertising art. This example likely predates the version with the 1962 copyright date in the lower right corner (see images). It bears two maxims that differ from the dated version: “Clean your finger before you point at my spots” was replaced with “Honey is sweet but the bee has a sting”, and “Fish & visitors stink after 3 days” was replaced with “Men and melons are hard to know”.
