A silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting various types of cheese and cheese names along with a fondue pot, glass bottles, fruit and a cutting board.
This print is from Country Prints’ Motif Gourmet collection, a decidedly design-forward group of towel/wallhangings and accessories that veered away from Wert’s typical Americana themes. This print was available in orange or turquoise colorways. Coordinating kitchen accessories were also offered; see links.
This print appears in the brochure “Country Prints by Robert Darr Wert and Neighbors”, c.1966.
This example is narrower than standard Country Prints towels and has imperfections in the printing. It was likely a test print done on a towel blank that was mis-sized at the factory. Purchased from a vintage eBay vendor in Greenfield MA (close to Gill), it was likely bought by its original owner directly at Country Prints during one their annual sales of “slight seconds”, which usually happened in the fall. This towel was acquired with a Motif Gourmet “Onions” towel in orange which also has printing imperfections.
Strike-offs exist of an unused design for this towel/wallhanging. That design was likely rejected because it was type-heavy by comparison to the production design which retains similar objects but has less than half of the cheese names; example shown below.Made/Created
