Description

Name:Emmanuel Protestant Episcopal Church (No longer exists) '(See also; Emmanuel Episcopal Church) Denomination; Episcopal Location; South Main and Bruce Street, Harrisonburg, Va. Notes; The cornerstone of the new church was laid on June 24, 1868 at the lot on the N.E. corner of Main and Bruce Streets. Mr. Dudley was ordained as priest and became the rector of Emmanuel Church. He left at the end of 1868 and later became Bishop of Kentucky. The church at that time had about 50 communicants. About 1903 the church was expanded and improved. In 1937 a nearby gas explosion weakened the church structure and by 1954 the walls were bulging outward and required the installation of tie rods. In 1956 a study for either renovation of the existing church or construction of a new church was conducted. In the spring of 1958 the congregation gave approval for the construction of a new church. It was built on the lot formerly occupied by the old rectory at the (NE) corner of Main Street and Cantrell Avenue. The first service in the new church was held November 20, 1960.
