Description

1914-1919 Allied Victory Medal "Sapper J.W. Sanders, C.E." The Allied Victory Medal includes a rainbow ribbon, representing international Allies and friendships. The bronze medal depicts Victory, a Roman and Greek goddess. One arm is outstretched while the other holds a palm branch, representing peace. The back of the medal reads, "The Great War for Civilisation." A laurel wreath sounds the wording.

The First World War

Context

The Allied Victory Medal was given to all ranks of the British Empire, including soldiers, civilians, and medical staff who served in any theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. It was given to members of the British Navy who served in Russia between 1919-1920. The Allied Victory Medal was also provided to British sailors who cleared the North Sea of mines between 11 November 1918 and 30 November 1919. 351, 289 Victory medals were given to members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
