1940 Canadian Army officer's identity disc "Major C.L.H. Bowen." Octagonal green pressed paper/plastic fiber. Two 4mm diameter holes stamped into top/bottom. Tied to 1988.16.6B. With 64 cm long white cotton whipcord.

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, identity discs, or more colloquially known as "dog tags," were used to identify active-duty soldiers. They bear information such as name, blood type, service number, rank, and oftentimes, religion.
