Description
1917-1918 52nd Battalion Lieutenant's Service dress cap made of khaki green barathea wool. The crown is circular. The body is four-piece construction with eight painted green ventilation grommets (0.8 cm diameter) on the rear of the cap. On the front of the cap band is a brass cap badge (3.6 cm x 3.8 cm) denoting the 52nd Battalion of Canada. The chinstrap (33 cm long x 0.9 cm wide) is made of medium brown leather and can be adjusted with matching leather sliders. Two general list buttons (1.4 cm diameter) connect the chinstrap to the cap band. The peak is stiffened.
The inside is lined with a silk twill fabric. The sweatband (5 cm wide) is made with the same fabric and is decorated with a decorative quilt pattern. The crown is interfaced/padded with an extra layer of raw wool and is quilted in a circular pattern that moves from the centre to the sides.
The cover is a lighter khaki green twill, possibly made from cotton or linen. The body has four-piece construction with two of the seams overlapping about 2 cm for a button closure on either side of the head. The button is a light brown and made of plastic (1.2 cm diameter). The cover is unlined and made with a single layer of fabric.
Use
Worn by Lieutenant's in the 52 Battalion of Canada during World War One. The cover on the cap was used to keep the crown and body clean. The cover was easier to wash when needed.
