Description
1918 2nd Division Machine Gun Corps private's service dress cap made of tan khaki serge wool. The crown is circular and unstiffened. The body is four-piece construction with two brass grommets on either side of the head. The cap band is quilted with three lines of straight stitches. On the front of the cap band (5 x 5 cm), the cap badge denoting the 2nd Division Machine Gun Corps is hooked in place with a metal bar. The cap badge depicts a royal crown superimposed over two machine guns crossed over each other. Underneath reads "CANADA." The chinstrap (32.5 cm long x 1 cm wide) is made of medium brown leather and made adjustable with two brass, rectangular buckles (1 x 1.4 cm). General list buttons (1.3 cm diameter) on either side of the attach the chinstrap to the cap band. The peak is unstiffened but its shape is held with six lines of quilted straight stitches that follow the shape of the peak.
The crown and peak are unlined. The sweatband (3.8 cm wide) is made of a green-ish wool broadcloth. The body seems to have been lined with a black plastic-like material or leather, but the lining has mostly disintegrated.
