Description

1939-1945 Defence Medal. A silver (.800) circular medal. Obverse contains a bareheaded effigy of King George VI facing left with title "GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP:" Reverse shows the Royal Crown resting on an oak tree flanked by a lion and lioness. Top left of reverse has "1939" and top right has "1945" Bottom of reverse has "The Defence Medal" Ribbon is light green with a central orange stripe, and a thin black stripe flanking each side of the orange stripe. Ribbon measures 3.2 x 5.8 cm. Medal has plain, straight suspender on top. Medal is court-mounted in group of 16 medals.

Use

Awarded to British and Commonwealth forces that served in non-operational areas that were still under threat of enemy actions for a specific amount of time. It was awarded to Canadian personnel for six months of service in Great Britain between 03 September 1939 and 08 May 1945.
