Context

Footnote: The 15th Battalion, or 48th Highlanders, was formed in Ontario and assembled in Valcartier, Quebec, in 1914. It sailed to England on October 3, 1914, and included 44 officers and 1,109 members from the rank and file. Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Currie commanded the 15th. It fought in France and Belgium and served with the 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Canadian Division. The 15th Battalion is famous for holding the line at the Second Battle of Ypres when the German Army released chlorine gas, causing the French 45th Algerian Division to panic and flee. Along with the 8th Battalion, the 15th secured Allied lines, which had a massive torn hole, counterattacked against German troops, and won the first day of battle on April 22, 1915. The 15th disbanded on September 15, 1920.
