Description

1885-1886 Queen's Own Rifles (Q.O.R.) of Canada Company commemorative flag. Rectangular hand-painted white silk.

Use

This silk flag was created to commemorate the Battle of Cut Knife Hill--one of the notable battles of hte 1885 North-West Rebellion. The flag was handmade by soldiers (and their wives) of No. 1 Company, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada (QOR).

Context

At Cut Knife Hill, No. 1 Company, part of a 350-man force led by Colonel William D. Otter (the first President of the RCMI in 1890), advanced in extended order under fire, charged an enemy-held hillock, and retired in a fighting withdrawal. In 1886, the soldiers of No. 1 Company presented this flag to their Company Officer, Captain Tom Brown.
