4 1/2 X 6 1/22 inch black/white photograph "Captain Arthur Howard, 1885." Detail shows Howard kneeling behind a Gatling machine-gun with his right hand on firing crank lever. Howard in dressed in American Army forage cap, jacket, and trousers.

Context

Howard served as technical advisor Toronto Infantry School 1883-1885. Action at Batoche May 1885. As Lieutenant in Royal Canadian Dragoons served in South Africa - Leewburg - Belfast - Witpoort: 1899-1900. Raised Canadian Scouts (M.G. Section) January 19011. He was killed in action at Derby, South Africa, February 17, 1901.
