Description

1918-1919 5th Battalion Western Cavalry officer's cap. The officer's cap is made from a khaki green wool twill. On the sides are two khaki-painted metal grommets. The top of the cap is flattened and has a stiffened front peak. The leather chinstrap (27 cm long x 1 cm wide) is made adjustable with two brass buckles and secured with two brass British Royal coat of arms buttons (1.1 cm diameter). The cap badge denotes the 5th Battalion Western Cavalry. The badge is made from darkened copper with the King's crown on top of a wreath with a red felt backing. Over the red backing is a rampant horse, "CANADA", and a "5". The interior of the cap has a leather sweatband with a silk ribbon strap. The crown and body are lined with a quilted dark green cotton or linen material. The crown has a liner stiffener of semi-soft rolled cotton.
