2017.19.2Description
1914-1918 Canadian Universal Pattern helmet (Valcartier) made of khaki tan drill. The helmet is in a Wolseley pattern. On the crown is a screw-on topper that covers the brass ventilator opening. The crown is made with six-piece construction. Connecting the crown and the peak is a thin cap band made of matching twill tape (1.8 cm wide). The peak is also six-piece construction, matching with the seams of the crown. The crown and peak are stiffened with cork. The helmet is missing its cloth pugaree and badge. On the sides of the helmet, under the cap band, are brass rivets (1.2 cm diameter) that hooks onto the chinstrap on the inside of the helmet. The chinstrap (46 cm long x 1.3 cm wide) is made with a red-brown medium leather. It is adjustable with a square buckle and eleven buckle holes.
The inside crown is lined with a tan twill material. The four-prong brass ventilator (3.6 cm diameter) is visible on the inside. The sweatband is made of medium brown leather and can be adjusted with a cord woven between the top of the leather band. Between the sweatband and the crown are eight rubber cylindrical head cushions. The peak is lined with a green material, likely cotton or linen.Context
The pattern was introduced in May 1904. Worn as an issue "tropical" helmet to protect from sun stroke.Made/Created
