Description
1940's Canadian Army officer's identity disc "Captain H.G.G. Tolchard." Cylindrical red-brown pressed paper/vegetable compound. Holed at top. Stamped one side: "CAPT H G G TOLCHARD CE CDN" Tied to 36 cm. long looped white cotton string, joined to other identity disc (1998.35.2).
Use
Identity discs, or more colloquially known as "dog tags," were used to identify active-duty soldiers. They bear information such as name, blood type, service number, rank, and oftentimes, religion.
