1914-1918 Canadian Machine Gun Corps service dress cap

Use

A Great War service khaki cap made from drab wool material. The top is flattened and has a front visor. An adjustable leather chinstrap is connected to two chinstrap buttons on either side of the cap. In the center of the cap is a Canadian Motor M.G. cap badge. It is made of brass or gilding metal, crossing one another are Vickers M.G., several jewels are in the central band of the Crown, and the word "Canada" is written at the bottom of the cap badge. The interior contains a black sweatband and black fabric lining.

Context

See 1918-1919 8th Battalion officer's service dress cap for context. Authorized under Routine Order 558 on February 22, 1917, the Canadian Machine Gun Corps mobilized in France on April 16, 1917. It was responsible for all machine guns in the CEF. It included the Machine Gun Squadron, Canadian Cavalry Brigade, machine gun companies, the 1st Motor Machine Gun Brigade, and motor machine gun batteries. A depot was also formed in Britain on January 4, 1917. It fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 with 358 machine guns.
