General Notes

Note

Ted Jocelyn was a Vice Commodore & a long standing RHYC member, Ed and Bob Jocelyn's father. Ted Jocelyn was an early Hamilton baseball / softball great, and a top batter with the Hamilton Cardinals of the Niagara District Baseball League batting between .444 & .475 while playing centre field in the 1940s'. Ted Jocelyn and sons Bob & Ed sailed Lightnings at the club starting from the late 1940s until the 1970s. Starting as a newbie racer in 1949 Ted Jocelyn placed 3rd overall in the Lightning Class that year, in his lLghtning named for his sons - wait for it..... Bob-Ed. In 1950 Ted Jocelyn represented RHYC at the Lake Erie Lightning regatta; the total RHYC team was five Lightnings with Ted's team peers of note being Robertson and Townsend. Robertson finished 2nd in the fleet of 38 Lightnings, Jocelyn 22nd, and Townsend 31st. After only two years as a member, in 1951 Ted Jocelyn was elected Rear Commodore. The sons were sailing Moth's (1953 - 1955) and Ted acquired a new Lightning Bob-Ed II in 1954, which he competed in Lake Ont and Lake Erie & Buffalo events. Ted Jocelyn had a career in roofing that was quite successful and by the early 1960's had turned him into a Hamilton roofing magnet as President of Jocelyn Roofing; this gave him the freedom to travel and enjoy sailing on his terms. In 1951 Ted Jocelyn met Toledo's Dick Krauss, the US National Dragon class champion; over the next twelve plus years they partnered and campaigned the Krauss Dragon off and on at events in St. Petersburg, New Orleans, Nassau, Miami, Bermuda and other North American venues. In 1956 Bob Jocelyn led the RHYC Junior team against 2 CDN & 8 American teams for the Sears Cup at the North American Junior Championships held in Y-Flyers at RSLYC. They placed a disappointing 4th overall after having led the series at the end of day two. In 1958 14 yr old Ed Jocelyn won the Moth class at the RHYC Open. 1959 Bob Jocelyn swept the RHYC season, winning 5 trophies on Presentation night. In 1961 & 1962 Ted Jocelyn served as Vice Commodore under Commodore Archie Palmer, while son Bob was RHYC's Fleet Captain. In 1962 Bob Jocelyn captained an RHYC team of 12 sailors in a Frostbite series at Rochester which Rochester won by a single race; he also competed in Lightnings in a Lake Erie invitational. In 1963 Bob Jocelyn coached the Canadian Lightning sailing team at Lima Peru. In 1965 Ted Jocelyn raced in the Southern Ocean Circuit Lipton Cup, Miami to Nassau offshore race and the Governors Cup Bermuda race as foredeck on a Bermuda 40 with the North Cape Yacht Club (NCYC) team [Western Lake Erie / Lassalle, Michigan] of Swindeman and Krauss. Ted also campaigned Dragons and Lightnings on Lake Erie that year, winning the NCYC's Regatta's Lightning division, spring and fall. Bob Jocelyn acquired his purple hulled Viking 28 CROWN ROYAL by 1970. [Further to Rob's point about the Viking's - Ontario Yachts started production of the Viking 28 in 1968 and had sold 70 by the spring of 1971, 11 of which were at RHYC] In 1973 Bob was the RHYC Regatta Chair for the first RHYC Great Lakes Viking Assn regatta which attracted twenty five Viking from around the lake. This became a series run by the Club for many years. The Viking Regatta award was the Scotty Cowan Memorial Trophy, named for the Club's first Viking owner. As there's no "Cowan" associated with any of the current trophies on record, the Cowan is possibly another club trophy that's disappeared off the radar over time. In the mid 1970's Ed Jocelyn was racing his DESTINY in the Viking / C&C 33 Fleet and LOR II. Bob Jocelyn (Crown Royal) won the Viking North American's in 1977. 1979 Ed Jocelyn represented RHYC in I14's Ted & Bob Jocelyn each brought a Tartan Ten (T10) to Hamilton / RHYC in 1980 when they became the Canadian dealer for Tartan Marine. Ted's boat was Green Machine, a boat that he first put up for sale in 1980 at cost. more often helmed by son Ed in later years than by Ted himself. Green Machine was campaigned extensively in the late 80's to mid 90's - or later. William Edwin (Ted) Jocelyn died in March 1987; this Ted Jocelyn Memorial trophy (0339) was presented by the family in his memory in 1991 and awarded that year. Bob Jocelyn passed Dec. 2001 and Ed Jocelyn in 2013.
