Scope and Content

An exchange of letters between Captain Norman McLeod Mowat and the Commanding officer of the RMR at the time, Lt-Col Charles Basil Price. There are two letters, the first is hand written on the Realties Limited Real Estate official paper, dated the 16th of November 1920. The letter is written by Captain N.M Mowat and is addressed to the O.C. of the 58th Royal Montreal Regiment. In the letter, Captain Mowat apologizes for his absence from the last men's meeting, explaining that he had to attend to business. Mowat worked for Realties Limited Real Estate, Loans and Investments in downtown Montreal. The second letter, dated a day later on November 17, 1920 is the answer from the C.O of the RMR. While there is no name or signature, we know it was written by Lt-Col C.B. Price as he had become C.O. of the RMR on July 1, 1920. In the letter, Price criticizes the discipline of the the captain and claims that he should rethink his role as a captain with the RMR.

Archive Notes

Transcription of handwritten letter: "Sir, I regret my absence from the last mens meeting; it was unavoidable as I was suddenly called out on business. During the day time I can always take any time I wish even the whole day but as the men who are [conducted?] with me in business are not actively connected in this office it is often necessary for me to see them in the evening with very little notice / as has been the case several times lately owing to the bad conditions in business generally. I hope things will improve in the near future. I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient servant"
