Description

Glass plate negative photo of the interior of the Quillcote house, author Kate Douglas Wiggin's residence in Hollis, Maine. The back side of the negative has a section of a postcard pasted on. "Aug. 10, 1933 - the best neg" is written in pencil on the postcard section. The photographer Bradbury was likely sizing these photos to create postcards. The date written in pencil is likely the processing date and not the date the actual photo was taken. This image of "The Painted Room - North Wall" has appeared on postcards. Many of these postcards of Quillcote are still widely available today and sold by antique ephemera dealers. This very postcard is in the Dyer Library Archives in the "Gibeon E. Bradbury Family Papers" collection (MMS51.Ph6.1 & MMS51.Ph6.2). The wall murals in the Quillcote house are attributed to artist Rufus Porter, circa 1820.
