View between two roving machines. Note the difference in the size and method of winding threads. The spinning frames' spindles reflected a straight wind after the thread passed through the steel rolls, while the roving frame featured a flyer through which the thread passed before being wound on a spindle. This provided more twist and drawing of the thread. In earlier times, the attendant at the end of the machine might have watched the machines for broken threads and hand-pieced them back together. In later decades, this work was done by a device that traveled the length of the machine piecing up the ends to assure continuous production.Made/Created
