Glass lantern slide of an unidentified woman Standing near the wharves at Highlands Beach, NJ. "Highlands on the Shrewsbury" is written on the slide label. Highlands Beach was a popular vacation spot during the Gilded Age. It was home to Sandlass Resort, run by the Sandlass family, which offered a variety of beachside and water recreation. People would travel by boat and train from across the Tri-State area to visit. Nearby was the town of Shrewsbury, which also offered winter recreation such as Ice Boating.
