Description

Glass-plate negative of the Peanutine, a peanut-shaped wagon pulled by two donkeys at Old Orchard Beach, ME. A sign for "Moxie" drinks can be seen in the background. The Peanutine wagon was one of the prime attractions at Old Orchard Beach. The wagon was operated by Kenneth Norton, who started as a young boy and sold Peanutine - a peanut and molasses confection made by E.B. Sears Peanutine Company in Old Orchard - on the beach well into adulthood. He is listed as a "Clerk" for a "Confectionery" at the age of 21, living with his grandparents, in the 1920 Old Orchard Beach census. There are several postcards from that era featuring Kenneth Norton and the Peanutine wagon.
