In 1826, a group of investors from Boston and Saco established the Saco Manufacturing Company, the first textile factory in Saco. The company built a seven-story wooden cotton mill, company boarding houses, and began construction on a canal from the head of the falls to the factory. Unfortunately, in February 1830, the factory and most of the workers’ housing was consumed by a disastrous fire. This ledger records the wage payments for the mill workers.
