Description

Framed needlework sampler made by Sarah Jane Remick (1817-1900) of Eliot, ME, consisting of 4 alphabets, a set of numerals 1-9, the maker's name twice along with her brother's name, age, and birthdate, a verse (see Notes field for transcription), all within a stylized floral border along the top and sides. Decorative elements, some idiosyncratic but common to this group of samplers, appear in the bottom half of the sampler, These motifs consist of a central basket with a large flower, 2 square-within-diamond flowers and drooping buds, fruit baskets on either side below which are branches with birds; other birds on branches are flanked by two round trees each with a bird. Several dogs are pictured in profile. Worked in cross over one and two threads, satin, chain stitches in green, blue, yellow, beige, and cream silk threads. Molded dark wood frame.
