Description

Man's tall black top hat with a slightly curved brim. The exterior is covered with silk plush, a short-napped fabric that replaced beaver felt after about 1830. The edge of the brim is bound with a narrow black grosgrain ribbon and the same type of ribbon is used to decorate the base of the crown where it meets the brim. The underside of the brim is lined with black cotton twill fabric. The whole hat seems to have been stiffened with either a heavy weight paper or light paperboard. The interior of the crown is lined with a brown silk fabric with a black leather sweatband. The lining of the top is embossed in gold with the label of the hat maker and retailer. The inscription reads: "DEUX MEDAILLES de 1ere CLASSE / CHAPEAU BREVETE / Laville Petit & Crespin / PARIS /A.N. Cook & Co. / BOSTON."
