The Nike Factory located in Saco, Maine on Factory Island closed in November of 1985, about 8 years after it opened in 1978. The stated reason for closing was due to the increased labor cost and fringe benefits. After closing multiple American factories Nike focused on importing from Asia. 500 employees worked at the Saco Nike Factory, before shutting down.
