Description

Photograph of workers at roving frames in the Laconia Division of the Pepperell Manufacturing Company. The roving machinery followed the drawing frames. By the time the cotton strands had reached the roving machines, they had become so attenuated that unless a twist was inserted the fibers would easily break apart, The slubber, intermediate, and fly frame roving machines all inserted a slight amount of twist into the strands of cotton in order to strengthen them. After passing through the spinning frame, the final twist was added to the fiber making it strong enough to be woven into cloth. This collection of Laconia Mills photos was discovered in the attic of 116 North Street in Saco, ME by Arthur Morrow. Real estate records show that Ernest L. Morrill, agent of the Pepperell Manufacturing Company lived at the house.
