Fine wool bodice, the top pleated section of silk. Round neckline, no collar present; remnants of silk still attached. The trim is composed of faux pearls and metal beads in geometric arrangements with some long and short tassels. The trim is in 2 3/4" sections that are applied to the bodice around the chest and at the waist; the trim continues on the back. There is a gathered silk ruffle that goes over the shoulders and around the front and back at upper chest height. The sleeves are very full and terminate slightly below the elbow. They are trimmed with more pearl and metal beads as well as a silk ribbon rosette and a gathered ruffle of the same silk that trims the upper bodice. The petersham label is of twill woven silk ribbon is attached at the back and buckles at the front. The name of the store, "Sampson" and "Biddeford" is printed on the left ribbon. There is a separate piece (1988.7.4) of pleated ribbon backed by a piece of the dress fabric ending in a bow, slightly curved, fastens with hooks and eyes (13 1/2" long).
