Lowell Inness was born in Saco, March 3, 1894. His parents were Charles and Georgie Sawyer Innes. He graduated from Thornton Academy in 1912 and went on to college at Yale University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1916. He began teaching in 1917 in a one-room schoolhouse on Flag Pond Road in Saco. In 1920, Lowell married Ethelinda Deering Frey. The couple moved to Pittsburgh that year, and Lowell began working at the Arnold School, were he was an English teacher and also worked in administrative guidance. The Arnold School merged with the Shady Side Academy in 1940, and Innes continued on first as an assistant and then headmaster. He remained at Shady Side until his retirement in 1961, when he and Ethelinda returned to Saco. Innes was a noted authority of American pressed glass and organized the first comprehensive exhibition of Pittsburgh Glass at the Carnegie Museum in 1940. He contributed numerous articles to a variety of periodicals and lectured widely on the subject up until the time of his death. His book on Pittsburgh Glass was published in 1976.
