Description

A glass plate negative photograph of a section of the York County Maine 1856 Map by J.L. Smith & Co., highlighting the Town House (City Hall) in Saco. A fire hand-pump fire engine is in front of the building. This is Saco City Hall (1855, designed by Thomas Hill, constructed by Abraham Cutter) before the cupola was removed from the middle of the roof and the clocktower was added in 1880. The side of the building shows the names of the early fire engines that were deployed from this building as well as the quarters for the Saco Fire Department - "Deluge No. 4," "Deluge Hotel," "Niagara Hall," and "Niagara #3."
