Description

Silk gauze dress trimmed with pink silk basketweave patterned silk ribbon. Original underskirt now missing. Round neckline, dipping slightly in the front, trimmed with a narrow piece of the ruffle material that has been ruched. The bodice closes down the front with eleven brass hooks and eyes. Ornamental fabric covered buttons run down the outside of the front, several now missing. The top of the sleeves have fabric piping. The original sleeves were short, for evening wear, and have similar ruched trim. Long sleeves have been sewn on with the pink ribbon trim at the wrist. Flat waistband closes with hooks and eyes slightly left of center. The bodice is lined in cotton fabric and has two pieces of boning on each side of the bodice where the darts are located. There were originally a single piece of boning at each side seam, now missing. The bodice has a combination of hand and machine sewing. At the waistline at the back of a bodice, a hand written note is sewn. The skirt is gathered and ends in three rows of gathered ruffles. The ruffle material is silk gauze with four rows of pink basketweave stripes. The top ruffle has an additional narrow row of the same material which has been ruched. The skirt is slightly longer in the back.
