Description

Framed needlework sampler made by Olive Ann Parker when she was 13 years old, May 1840. At the top of sampler is the verse: "Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand, As the first effort of my hand: And while my fingers o'er this canvass move, Engage my heart to seek thy love". Beneath the verse are three sets of the alphabet and a family register. Three sided border of colorful flowers and vines (no border at the top) with a small silk bow at the center bottom. Worked in silk thread in linen in cross, satin, outline, and straight stitches. The register reads: A Family Register Abel Parker & Lucy Tetherly Married Jan. 5th 1818 Rufus Parker born Jan. 30th 1819 William Parker born Jan 3d 1825 Olive A. Parker born July 1st 1827 Nathl S. Parker born June 3d 1834 Wrought by Olive Ann Parker Age 13 years May 1840 Bordered by a design of vines, flowers and trees.
