Description

Lozenge-shaped needlework of a coat of arms worked in silk, metallic threads, and spangles on a silk satin ground. The central armorial shield is surmounted by a helmet and flanked by emfroidered acanthus leaves. Below the shield is a ribbon which bears the words "The Name of Cutts." The frame is painted black with a gold liner and has applied gilded metal mounts on each corner. At the top is a small metal ring attached. Made in 1783 by Elizabeth Cutts, daughter of Thomas Cutts, while studying in Boston at the school of Eleanor Druitt.
