Description

Single cylinder double-acting horizontal steam engine made by Biddeford Machine Works. The company was located at the corner of Pearl and Stone Streets (in the general vicinity of where Biddeford's Mechanic Park now is). It appears in Biddeford city directories from 1880-1886. The managers were Nathaniel and Herbert L. Currier of Saco, who lived on Elm and Beach Streets in Saco. This is a stationery engine used to pump and drive mills and factories - possibly the mills on the islands in the Saco River. There is a brass plate with the name "Biddeford Machine Works, Biddeford, Me."
