Description

Glass plate negative photo of Kate Douglas Wiggin at the well at her residence in "Quillcote" in Hollis, ME. The back of the plate has a section of postcard pasted on. Bradbury was sizing these plates to create postcards. Several postcards were made of this photo and they are still sold widely as antique ephemera. Two copies of this postcard can be found in the Dyer Library archives in the "Gibeon E. Bradbury Family Papers" collection (MMS51.Ph21.1 and MMS51.Ph21.2). Why this glass plate negative appears in the Gibeon Bradbury, Jr. glass plate negatives collection is a mystery. According some newspaper articles in 1908, this photo was taken by Charles E. Moody. There is a glass lantern slide of this image in the Charles E. Moody collection entitled "Rebecca at the Well" (after "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm," a famous 1903 children's book by Kate Douglas Wiggin). Bradbury took numerous photos of Kate Douglas Wiggin and her property and turned many of these photos into postcards. It is quite possible that Moody gave Bradbury the glass plate negative of this photo to be included with his postcard production.
