Description

Sampler worked by Hannah Marcia Tucker on unbleached linen with silk thread in cross over one and two threads. Stylized floral border encloses two upper case alphabets and one series of numbers. The inscription in the middle of the sampler is enclosed in a saw-toothed border and reads: "Hannah M. Tucker Aged Years in the year of our Lord Ann Tucker born November 2" Below that is the verse: "Jesus permit they gracious name to stand ("d" on line above the "n") As the first efforts of an infant hand And while her fingers over this canvas move (word "move" squeezed in over "as" of canvas) Engage her tender heart to seek thy love" Marcia also included a number of birds in her sampler, both above the inscription and below the verse.
