Twenty-third volume of the diary of Benjamin Simpson of Saco, 1781-1849. This volume covers the period April 28, 1823 through June 12, 1824. It is handwritten in ink on rag paper with a handsewn binding; it is now housed in a modern paper cover. Most of the entries are a single line. The date is listed at the top of each page, with individual entries (without dates) listed below. Simpson noted his major task of the day and the weather.
In June 1823 Simpson noted that his neighbor John Berry had been acting strangely recently and he was confined for a short time. In late June 1823 Simpson went to Alfred to see Jeremiah Bradbury about buying some salt marsh land. In early July he started to lay out the marsh land he had bought from Bradbury. August 1, 1823, Simpson reported that he had gone to the falls to see the overseers of the poor about Benjamin Whitten and his family. Whitten's wife and one child had come to Simpson's house the night before because Whitten had threatened to kill them. Also in August Simpson noted that he was helping son Ebenezer build his house, assisting in framing and raising it. In March 1824 Simpson mentioned that he went to a barn hauling for Moses Grace. He had mentioned helping with barn haulings several times earlier in this volume, as well as in previous ones.Dimensions
